Confirming Your Household Drivers & Young Drivers

Auto insurance doesn’t just follow vehicles—it follows the drivers in your household. As families grow and driving situations change, it’s important to ensure every licensed driver living in your home is properly accounted for on a policy. When a driver in the household isn’t listed or covered elsewhere, it can create unexpected gaps in protection if an accident occurs.

Insurance carriers generally expect all licensed household drivers to be disclosed, even if they do not regularly drive a particular vehicle. Situations that often affect coverage include:

  • A newly licensed teenage driver
  • A college student returning home during school breaks
  • Another adult living in the household who has a drivers license

Even if someone does not drive your vehicles regularly, their presence in the household can affect how coverage applies if an accident occurs.

Vehicle ownership can also impact how a policy applies. For example:

  • A vehicle owned solely by your child (or someone other than you or your spouse
  • The primary named insured not having a financial interest in that vehicle
  • Vehicle ownership records not matching the insurance policy

Some insurance carriers may restrict or deny coverage in these situations. Reviewing driver and ownership details ahead of time can help ensure every driver and vehicle in your household is aligned correctly with your policy.

Vehicles Beyond Your Car May Need Their Own Protection

Many households today own vehicles beyond their everyday cars. Recreational and specialty vehicles often play a big role in how families spend their time, but they typically require their own insurance protection.

Vehicles such as ATVs and UTVs, snowmobiles, golf carts, jet skis, and other personal watercraft commonly require their own insurance policy. Standard auto insurance generally does not extend protection to these types of vehicles, so they typically need coverage designed specifically for how and where they are used.

It’s also helpful to remember a few situations where coverage may not apply the way people expect:

  • Renting recreational vehicles on vacation (ATVs, jet skis, snowmobiles, golf carts) usually requires its own protection
  • Personal auto policies typically do not extend to these rentals
  • Recreational vehicles generally need to be insured in the state where they are primarily garaged or reside

Households that keep recreational vehicles at a cabin, lake property, or vacation home in another state may need to ensure those vehicles are insured appropriately for that location. Taking a moment to review these vehicles will help ensure everything you own has the right protection based on it's use, location and type of vehicle.

Smart Vehicle Maintenance for Long-Term Savings

Protecting your vehicle isn’t only about insurance ... it’s also about keeping your car healthy and reliable for the long run! Regular maintenance may feel like an upfront investment, but staying ahead of repairs can help prevent larger and more expensive problems later.

Simple maintenance habits can make a big difference over time. Staying consistent with routine service can help extend the life of your vehicle. This often includes:

  • Getting oil changes on time
  • Following manufacturer-recommended service intervals
  • Addressing small issues before they become larger repairs

These steps may feel like routine upkeep, but they can help reduce the likelihood of unexpected breakdowns.

Seasonal care also matters. Even though winter is ending, colder weather may still bring snow and road salt. Taking a few extra steps can help protect your vehicle:

  • Wash your vehicle regularly during winter months
  • Pay special attention to the undercarriage
  • Remove built-up road salt that can cause corrosion

Keeping up with these habits can help your vehicle stay on the road longer and maintain its reliability. If you have young kids, bring them along for the car wash - you might even turn it into a fun, colorful car wash dance party!
